Mission in the 21st Century
This collection of essays from people engaged in mission in a variety of contexts around the world shows that there isn’t just one, but many and various, narratives of mission. It is especially in the context of cultural pluralism that the editors invited the contributors to write. What emerges is a rich variety of theoretical and practical vistas on the Christian mission.
Mission as Transformation
Mission as Transformation: A Theology of the Whole Gospel brings together in one volume twenty-five years of biblical reflection on mission practice with the poor from around the world. The whole gospel is centered on the rule of Christ over the whole of life. It seeks to impact a community with the values and the spiritual challenges of the kingdom of God. The key to holistic ministry is enabling people to experience Christ’s Lordship. Holistic Mission integrates proclamation, evangelism, church planting and social transformation in a seamless whole of Christian mission. This approach to mission has been adopted since 1983 by most evangelical agencies involved in development, and most indigenous mission agencies concerned with transforming the lives of the communities they work with.
A New Christian Manifesto
Bob Ekblad delivers a radical new reading of the Lord’s Prayer by arguing that there are earthly power structures and allegiances that prevent God’s kingdom from coming “on earth as in heaven.” Drawing on his experiences in ministry with marginalized people and his understanding of the Bible, Ekblad calls the church to follow Jesus by seeking its own deliverance from these structures, and to recognize people on the margins as the most receptive to becoming agents of transformation. A New Christian Manifesto urges Christians to break down barriers to join Jesus in a movement that includes recruiting, healing, empowering, and setting out to achieve an ultimate victory of the cross.
Walking with the Poor
Theology, spirituality, and social science are synthesised in the definitive book on how Christian mission can contribute to overcoming poverty and dismantling systemic social evil. Myers explores Christian views of poverty, its causes, and how it is experienced differently in different cultures.
The Mission of God
Chris Wright believes that there is a missional basis for the whole Bible – it is generated by, and is all about, God’s mission. He offers a comprehensive and wide-ranging interpretative approach as the basis for holistic Christian mission.
Make Poverty Personal
Poverty is one of the great challenges of the 21st century. But poverty is not new. And neither is God’s deep concern for the poor–it is a theme deeply woven throughout the Bible. Yet sadly, churches and individual Christians have too often been blind to this emphasis, or they have been paralyzed into inaction by feelings of helplessness.
In this urgent, provocative book, Ash Barker offers both challenge and hope. Pulling out and reflecting on significant passages from both testaments, he reveals what the Bible says about both the nature of poverty and about how God calls his people to respond. These studies, ideal for either individual or small group use, are interlaced with personal reflections–first-hand accounts from fifteen years of ministry among the poor.
