There are many different ways that Christians understand mission across the world today. Even when Jesus was walking on the earth, there was plenty of confusion, as his behaviour defied many people’s understanding of God and his priorities.

Read Matthew 9:1-17.

1. What is it about Jesus’ actions that the teachers, Pharisees and John’s disciples find hard to understand? Can you sympathise with their confusion?

2. Why did Jesus spend time with tax-collectors?

3. Look at verses 16-17. Jesus gives us 3 pictures of how the old and the new can’t mix. How does what Jesus was doing differ from what everyone expected of him (think of as many examples as you can)?

4. Were there any stories of mission in the film which challenged your idea of mission? Would you be willing to do what the people in the film are doing?
